Queen Charlotte Walkway
The
track was really quite a joy when dry, and there were numerous picnic
spots along the way. Unfortunately the shadows were getting long
and we needed to press on and find acoomodation for the night.
We
arrived in Portage and discovered a fully stocked shop, that even
had spare mountain bike tyres! They also run a backpackers hostel,
so we got rooms for the evening. We picked up milk, yogurt and OJ
to supplement our porridge for the morning. We'd brought along some
peanut satay noodles for dinner, and also purchased some creamed
rice for dessert.
Despite
the lovely clear afternoon, the skies clouded over at dusk and we
saw no stars or light of any kind. John and I went out for a walk
after dinner, and could barely find our way along the road.
